Murder mystery team building, solved together live

One case. Every team racing the clock. One big reveal.

Your teams open a real police file on their phones, tablets or computers. Everyone gets a role and sees different evidence, new evidence lands for every team at the same moment, and it ends with the truth revealed on the big screen. In the office, on a call, or both. No host, no actors, no scripts.

How an event runs

From booking to the big reveal

Set up takes about two minutes. On the day, you press one button and the case runs itself.

  1. Set up your event

Name it, add your logo, choose how long it runs and how many teams. Then invite each team by email, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp in one click.

  2. Everyone joins on any device

Players open their team’s link or scan its QR code on a phone, tablet or computer, then pick a role: Forensics, Interviews, Digital or Records. No downloads, no accounts.

  3. Press Start

The briefing opens on every screen at once. The clock starts and the investigation begins.

  4. The case unfolds in acts

New evidence drops for every team at the same moment, then a twist before the deadline. Teams crack goals, share clues and climb the leaderboard.

  5. Accuse, then the reveal

Each team gets one accusation: who, why, and the proof. When the clock hits zero, the truth plays out on the big screen, then awards and certificates.

Built for teams

Not just a game. A proper team event.

Everything that makes people talk, plan and argue their way to an answer, and talk about it for weeks afterwards.

Everyone has a role, so nobody can solve it alone

Each player sees different files. Forensics has the scene and the lab results, Interviews has the statements, Digital has the messages and door logs, Records has the paperwork. The answer only comes together when people share what they’ve found.

  • Play on a phone, tablet or computer: one each, or a whole team round one screen
  • Spare roles are shared out automatically, so small teams still see everything
  • A shared team notebook for clues and theories

The case unfolds live, for everyone at once

Evidence arrives in acts. When the lab results come back, every team gets them in the same second, with a “breaking news” moment on every phone and the big screen. Then a twist lands before the deadline.

  • A shared countdown keeps the energy up
  • Breakthroughs from other teams flash up as they happen
  • Accusations lock at the deadline, no exceptions

Goals, hints and a live leaderboard

Teams don’t just guess at the end. Along the way they crack goals, like pinning down the time of the crime, to earn points and unlock hidden evidence. Stuck teams can buy a hint, at a price.

  • Points for every breakthrough, a bonus for solving it fast
  • Wrong answers cost a little, so teams have to agree first
  • The leaderboard on the big screen settles every argument

You stay in control, without having to host

The organiser gets a control room: who has joined, which roles they picked and how every team is doing. Press Start and the case runs itself. If you need to, pause it, add five minutes or message every screen.

  • Invite every team by email, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp in one click
  • Printable join cards with a link and QR code for every team
  • Late arrivals can still jump in
  • Reveal early if your schedule changes

One big reveal, then the bragging rights

When the clock hits zero, the killer, the motive and the proof are revealed on the big screen. Then the final standings and awards: Top Detectives, Sharpest Deduction, Fastest Breakthrough and No Stone Unturned, spread across teams so more people get a moment.

Certificates for everyone, and a report for you

Every player gets a certificate with their name, team and your event on it, ready to print or save as a PDF. The teams that crack the case get a Detective Excellence certificate. You get a results report with how each team worked, plus debrief questions you can use straight afterwards.

  • Your company logo on the certificates and the big screen
  • Report shows each team’s breakthroughs, hints and reasoning
  • Ten-minute debrief questions turn a fun hour into a real conversation

However your team works

In the room, on a call, or both

In the office or offsite

Put the Event Screen on a TV or projector. Teams play on their phones or laptops, or gather round one computer each, and the whole room watches the reveal.

Fully remote

Share the Event Screen on Teams, Zoom or Meet. Each team talks in its own breakout room and everyone comes back together for the reveal.

Hybrid

Everyone plays on their own device, so it doesn’t matter who’s in the room. Mix office and remote people in the same team.

For HR, L&D and team leads

Why it works as team building

It’s genuinely fun, but it’s built so the fun comes from working together.

  • Everyone has to contribute

Split evidence means the quiet person with the door logs matters as much as the loudest voice.

  • Real decisions under time pressure

One accusation, a deadline and points at stake: teams have to weigh up the evidence and agree.

  • Works across departments and sites

No prior knowledge and no awkward role-play, so new starters and senior leaders play on equal terms.

  • Something to talk about afterwards

The report and debrief questions help you connect the day back to how your teams communicate and decide.

Questions from organisers

Anything else? Email teams@coldcaseinc.com and a real person will reply.

How many people can take part?

Teams work best with 3 to 6 people, and you can run as many teams as you like. Our packages cover up to 4, 10 or 25 teams, which is roughly 12 to 150 people. For bigger groups, or several events across a company, we’ll quote for you.

How long does an event take?

You choose 60, 90 or 120 minutes when you set the event up. The case is paced to fit: evidence arrives in acts, accusations close near the end, and the reveal happens when the clock runs out.

Do we need a host or a facilitator?

No. Whoever organises the event presses Start and the platform runs the rest: new evidence drops at the right moments, the deadline, the scoring and the big reveal. If you need to, you can pause the clock, add extra time or send a message to every team.

Does it work for remote and hybrid teams?

Yes. Players join on any phone, tablet or computer, one each or a team round one screen, so it works the same whether people are in one room, on a call, or both. Remote teams can talk in breakout rooms, and the Event Screen can be shared on Teams, Zoom or Google Meet.

What devices do we need?

Any phone, tablet or computer with a web browser. Players can use a device each, or a team can gather round one computer and share it. There’s nothing to download and no accounts or passwords. You send each team its link by email, Microsoft Teams or WhatsApp from your control room, or players scan their team’s QR code or type its six-letter code. You’ll also want one shared screen for the Event Screen, such as a TV, projector or screen share.

Is it suitable for everyone at work?

Yes. The cases are fictional, there’s no gore, and nobody has to act, dress up or perform. People simply read, discuss and work it out together, which suits quieter colleagues as well as the loud ones.

What do we get at the end?

A live reveal on the big screen, final standings and awards, a printable certificate for every player, and a results report showing how each team did, with debrief questions you can use straight afterwards.
